Car Insurance Inquiry

My parents have a family plan that covers all four of our vehicles, and we’re all insured under the same policy. I recently received a speeding ticket that resulted in 5 points on my license. I’m wondering how much this might increase our family insurance premium.

I know I messed up and have decided not to drive for the next year. I live in Massachusetts, but the ticket was issued in New Hampshire. Thank you for any insight!

  1. Getting a speeding ticket, especially one that results in points, can indeed lead to an increase in your family’s insurance rates. In Massachusetts, insurance providers typically increase rates based on the driver’s record and the number of points accumulated. Since you received 5 points from the ticket, it’s likely that your family’s insurance premiums will see a noticeable increase.

The exact amount your family’s insurance will spike can vary significantly depending on the specific insurance company, the type of coverage, and how they assess risk. On average, insurance rates might increase by anywhere from 10% to 30% after a ticket, but it could be more or less depending on various factors.

It’s good to hear you’re planning not to drive for a year, which can help you avoid any additional incidents that might further impact rates. Once you’re eligible, consider taking a defensive driving course; this can sometimes help reduce points or offset some of the increases in premiums. It’s also a good idea to talk directly to your family’s insurance agent to understand how the ticket will affect their rates specifically.
