Co-owner in car title and insurance

Title and Insurance Co-Ownership Inquiry

My husband recently purchased a car under his name, and we would like to add me as a co-owner on the title. Is this feasible? Since we are both international students and have no prior driving experience, I’m also wondering if adding me as a co-owner will impact our insurance costs, especially since we both plan to drive the car. Thank you!

  1. Yes, it is possible to add you as a co-owner on the car title, but the process can vary depending on the state or country you are in. Typically, both owners need to be present when transferring the title, and you will likely need to provide identification and possibly other documentation.

Regarding insurance, adding you as a co-owner and driver could indeed affect the insurance premium. Insurance companies often take into consideration the driving history and experience of all drivers when calculating rates. Since you mentioned that neither of you has driven before, this could result in a higher premium because you may be considered a higher risk.

It’s a good idea to reach out to your insurance provider to get specific information on how adding you as a co-owner and driver might impact your policy. They can provide insights based on your unique situation and help you find the best coverage options.
