Glass coverage in CA?

Subject: Glass Coverage in California

Hi everyone,

I recently discovered a crack in my windshield and found out that my insurance doesn’t offer a specific “glass coverage” policy. This means if I want to replace the windshield, I have to use my main accident coverage, which comes with a $1,000 deductible. Since Safelite quoted me $1,100 for the replacement, it seems pointless to file a claim because it would just increase my rates in the future. This essentially leaves me with the option to pay the $1,100 out of pocket.

I’ve heard that some people have specific glass coverage that allows for replacement without a deductible and doesn’t affect their rates.

So, is this a common situation in California, or did I just choose the wrong insurance company? I currently have State Farm since they’re considered the “No. 1” insurance company, and I’d like to avoid issues if I need to make a claim for something else down the line. If it’s a company issue, any recommendations would be appreciated. Thanks!

  1. It sounds like you’re in a bit of a tough spot with the windshield replacement situation. In California, some insurance policies do offer optional glass coverage, which can help cover windshield repairs or replacements without a deductible and without affecting your insurance rates. However, not all insurance companies provide this option, and it can vary depending on the specific policy you have.

State Farm is a reputable company, but it’s possible that the specific policy you selected doesn’t include glass coverage or that it comes with a higher deductible. It might be worthwhile to contact your agent and ask if there are other options available or if you can add glass coverage to your policy for the future.

If you’re considering switching companies, some insurers are known for having better glass coverage options, such as Geico, Progressive, or USAA (if you qualify). It’s always a good idea to shop around and compare quotes and coverage options to find what best meets your needs.

In the meantime, if you’re facing a high deductible and are not planning to use insurance for this replacement, it might be worth looking into local repair shops for more affordable options or discussing payment plans with Safelite. Good luck!
