Hail claim with unrelated damage.

Hail Damage Claim with Pre-existing Issues

We experienced a significant hailstorm this morning, which left my truck badly damaged. However, a couple of years ago, I was hit by someone who backed into me, causing damage to one of the doors. At that time, I was with a different insurance company and chose not to file a claim. Now, with the extensive hail damage—alongside the truck having a lot of miles—I’m worried that my new insurance company might bring up the earlier, unrelated damage. I don’t recall needing to disclose that previous incident.

  1. It’s understandable to feel concerned about how past damage might affect your current claim. Generally, insurance companies focus on the damage related directly to the event in question—in this case, the hail storm. Since the prior damage from the accident was not reported to your new insurer, it typically shouldn’t impact your claim for the hail damage.

When filing your claim, be honest but straightforward about the current condition of your truck. If the insurance adjuster inspects your vehicle, they will primarily look at the hail damage. However, do keep in mind that if the previous damage is visible and significant, they may consider it in their assessment of the overall value of your truck.

If you’re still worried, it might be worth calling your insurance agent for clarification on their policies regarding prior damage and how it impacts the current claim process. They can provide more specific guidance based on your policy and situation. Good luck!
