Help Please! Car Insurance

Seeking Help with Car Insurance Info

Hi everyone,

I moved to NYC from the suburbs about 10-11 years ago and sold my car since then, so I haven’t thought about insurance in a long time. Unfortunately, I’m currently disputing a ticket from a decade ago and need to determine what kind of insurance I had back then.

I’ve already paid for 2-3 accident reports from NY State, but haven’t had any luck finding this information. My lawyer can’t access it, and the DMV has also told me they cannot retrieve my insurance details. The only incident I’ve been involved in was a minor fender bender, but that report didn’t include my insurance information either.

Does anyone know of any other sources or methods I could try to uncover this information? I rarely post, so please let me know if I’ve tagged this incorrectly.

Thank you so much for any advice or suggestions!

  1. Hi there,

It sounds like a frustrating situation, but there are a few avenues you can explore to find out the insurance information you need:

    1. Contact Former Insurance Providers: If you can remember any of the insurance providers you may have used in the past, it could be worth reaching out to them directly. Even if you didn’t have a current policy with them when you moved, they may have records of your previous coverage.

    2. Check Old Documents: If you have any old paperwork related to the car (like registration papers, previous insurance cards, or settlement documents), they might provide clues about your insurance provider.

    3. Credit Report: Sometimes, insurance companies will appear on your credit report if you had a policy. You can request a free credit report online, and it might help jog your memory.

    4. State Insurance Department: You can try reaching out to the New York State Department of Financial Services. They may have some resources or advice on how to track down past insurance coverage.

    5. Reach Out to Local DMV: While you mentioned the DMV couldn’t find the information, you could try asking them if they have any suggestions for you to track it down.

    6. Consult Your Lawyer: Since you already have a lawyer, consider asking if they can assist in drafting a request to any potential insurance companies on your behalf.

Good luck! I hope you find the information you need to resolve the ticket.
