I’m feeling a bit anxious about an auto insurance discount I have that I’m not sure I actually qualify for. I apologize for the lengthy post, but I really need some reassurance.

A few days ago, I bought my second car from a dealership, marking my first time financing a vehicle. I want to clarify that I was completely honest with my insurance broker and answered all questions accurately.

My broker initially quoted me around $290 a month with Progressive, which seemed like a great deal for my age and area, so I accepted it. After making my down payment, I finalized everything, and the insurance reflects what I was promised. However, I noticed on my discounts page there’s a “platinum loyalty discount” indicating I’ve been insured for three years, which is not true. In reality, I’ve only had my driver’s license for a little over two years.

I got my license when I was nearly 19, and I purchased my first car just two months before that, which was registered in my father’s name and insured under his policy. He added me as a driver about six or seven months ago, so I’ve really only been recognized as an insured driver for about six months.

I want to stress that I didn’t mislead the insurance broker; I clearly stated that I’ve been insured for less than a year with my previous car. While I’m currently able to make my payments, I’m worried about the possibility of my insurance quote being adjusted or facing unforeseen issues, such as legal action, due to an error that wasn’t my fault.

I’ve heard that Progressive might consider your parents’ insurance history when determining quotes, even if you’re only a recent addition to their policy.
