I could really use some guidance on a frustrating situation I’m facing.

In spring 2023, I experienced a slip-and-fall accident that has led to nearly eight months of physical therapy, along with an emergency room visit, scans, and an MRI about a month later. I promptly paid my share of the MRI bill, as well as all other medical bills, and submitted claims through my insurance.

During my recovery, I was in touch with the retail store where the incident occurred. After completing my physical therapy in February 2024, I began the settlement process with them. However, my insurance company somehow became aware of this and reached out, stating that I would need to reimburse them if a settlement was obtained from a liable third party. The subrogation company subsequently coordinated with the retailer’s claims department, and after reviewing all medical expenses, a settlement was finalized that allowed my insurance to reclaim their costs—matching the amounts they initially paid on my behalf.

Both I and the subrogation company received payments from mid-October to early November 2024, and since then, I have heard nothing until recently.

A couple of weeks ago, I received calls and voicemails from the MRI center regarding an outstanding balance. Initially, they claimed it was a billing error, but then I received an actual bill for over $2,000. Upon calling them, I learned that the insurance company had reversed their payments, and I was now responsible for the entire MRI cost.

Has anyone else dealt with a similar situation? It seems that my insurance company first recovered its costs from providers and then took back their payments, leaving me to cover the full expenses for my medical care—something that was never mentioned before. How can they legally recover their money twice like this? Any advice or insights would be greatly appreciated!
