Internship Drug Testing Inquiry
Hi everyone! I have an internship lined up this summer with a major insurance company. In my offer letter, it mentions that I need to pass a standard pre-employment “and/or drug test.” I’m curious if anyone has experienced a drug test before their internship in the insurance field, and what I should anticipate. Any insights would be appreciated! Thanks!
Congratulations on your internship offer! It’s quite common for large companies, especially in regulated industries like insurance, to require a drug test as part of the pre-employment process. Typically, you can expect a urine test, but some companies also use hair or saliva tests.
Here are a few things to keep in mind:
Timing: The drug test usually happens shortly after you accept your offer, sometimes even before you start any onboarding process. Make sure you know when to expect it.
Process: You’ll likely go to a designated lab or healthcare provider for the test. It’s usually quick and straightforward—just providing a urine sample in a private restroom.
Substances Tested: The standard panel typically tests for substances like marijuana, cocaine, amphetamines, PCP, and opiates, though this can vary by company.
Prepare: If you have any concerns about the testing process or substances, it’s a good idea to review any policies your employer has in place. If you’re on any prescribed medications, consider informing the HR department ahead of time.
Results: Typically, you won’t be notified of the results directly; your employer will be informed, and they’ll reach out to you if there are any issues.
If you have more questions or need support, don’t hesitate to reach out to your HR contact. Good luck with everything!
