Moving States for a year

Relocating for a Year

I think I already know the answer, but I’m curious about the details.

I’ll be moving from Illinois to Wisconsin for a year, and I just renewed my Illinois driver’s license, plates, and insurance.

If I choose not to get a Wisconsin license or update my Illinois address, will my car insurance become void or not provide coverage?

I know several friends who have kept their Illinois licenses after moving out of state, but what could happen if they were to get into an accident?

Thanks in advance for your insights!

  1. It’s great that you’re thinking ahead about the implications of moving states. Generally, if you move to a new state, it’s important to update your driver’s license, vehicle registration, and insurance to reflect your new address.

    1. Insurance Coverage: If you maintain your Illinois insurance while living in Wisconsin, you might still have coverage, but it could be affected. Most insurance companies require that you update your policy when you move, as factors like location can influence rates and coverage options. If you were to get into an accident, your claim could be denied or adjusted based on your failure to inform them about your change in residency.

    2. Legal Requirements: Each state has its own laws regarding residency and insurance. Driving with an IL license and plates in WI could potentially lead to legal issues, particularly if you’re stopped or involved in an accident.

    3. Recommendations: It’s usually best to inform your insurance company about your move and consider switching to a Wisconsin policy if you plan to stay there for a year. If you decide to get a WI driver’s license and register your car there, it will simplify things and ensure you’re fully covered under local laws.

In summary, while some friends may still hold an IL license, it can complicate matters in the event of an accident. It’s wise to follow the proper procedures to avoid any potential issues down the line.
