Moving to Another Country with a Car – Insurance Advice Needed
Hi everyone,
I’m relocating from Italy to Denmark at the beginning of June and I need some guidance regarding my car insurance.
I plan to bring my car with me, but I’m unsure about how to insure it. My current insurance policy expires on June 4th, and I’ll be able to drive legally within Europe starting in May.
What are my options? I know I have 30 days to register my car in Denmark. Should I go ahead and register and insure it with a Danish company even though I may not have a permanent address or a resident ID by that time?
Alternatively, I could renew my insurance in Italy with a monthly plan and delay the move until I have everything sorted out. However, I’ll need the car for my initial months in Denmark.
Does anyone have suggestions on how to navigate this situation? Is it possible to find an insurance provider that covers multiple European countries for an extended period, allowing me to change my nationality and license plates later?
Thanks for your help!
Moving to a new country with a car can be a bit complicated, especially when it comes to insurance and registration. Here are some options and considerations for your situation:
Danish Insurance: You can begin by reaching out to Danish insurance companies to see if they can provide coverage based on your current address and temporary residency status. Some insurers may allow you to start a policy without a final address, especially if you can show proof of your move. Explain your situation and ask if they have flexibility for expats.
Temporary Insurance: Look for insurance companies in Italy that offer temporary or monthly contracts. This would allow you to keep your car insured while you’re transitioning. Some companies provide coverage that is valid across Europe, which could be useful until you establish your residency in Denmark.
International Insurance: Some insurance companies specialize in international coverage. Research options that allow you to retain your Italian policy while making the necessary adjustments once you move. Ensure any policy you consider will cover you during the transition period.
Short-term Policy: If you are only planning to live in Denmark temporarily, inquire about short-term insurance policies designed for expats. This way, you can stay legal while you settle in and then transition to a more permanent solution once you have your resident ID and address.
Registering Your Car: Since you have 30 days to register your car after moving to Denmark, make sure to gather all the required documents to avoid any penalties. This typically includes proof of residence, ID, and your current insurance policy.
Consult with the Authorities: Consider reaching out to the Danish motor vehicle authority for advice on your specific situation. They may offer guidance on what’s acceptable regarding temporary insurance and registration without a permanent address.
Each of these options has its pros and cons, so weigh them according to your situation and urgency. Good luck with your move!
