Need advice, what should I do?

I’m in need of some advice. Our home has been unlivable since early February due to a pipe backup that flooded the house. Thankfully, the issue resolved itself, but we’ve been out of our home since then. We’re insured with ASI through Progressive. Our insurance adjuster mentioned that he would pay the mitigation company directly and then send us a check for the restoration costs. However, we’ve been waiting for weeks without any updates on the amounts or timelines. The only time I hear from him is when I need to extend our hotel stay.

I’ve been trying to be patient, but getting in touch with him has been a challenge, and his voicemail is full. We’re living in a hotel with our two dogs and a cat, and the stress is taking a toll on them—one of our dogs is actually at the vet right now. We’ve been relying on fast food for every meal, and I’m just desperate to get back home.

I need to know how much the insurance is covering so I can determine how much to withdraw from our 401k for the deductible and other costs, but I haven’t been able to see any information on our claim online. What steps should I take from here? I just want to return to my home. Thank you!

  1. I’m really sorry to hear what you’re going through—dealing with a flooded home and living in a hotel is incredibly stressful, especially with pets to care for. Here are some steps you can take to try to resolve the situation:

    1. Document Everything: Keep a detailed record of your communications with your insurance adjuster, including dates, times, and the content of the conversations. This will be helpful if you need to escalate the issue.

    2. Contact Customer Service: If you’re unable to reach your adjuster directly, try calling Progressive’s customer service. Explain your situation and ask to speak with a supervisor or someone who can provide updates on your claim.

    3. Escalate the Claim: Request to have your claim escalated due to the urgency of your living situation. You can mention the stress on your pets and the ongoing hotel costs to emphasize the need for prompt responses.

    4. Reach Out via Social Media: Sometimes companies respond faster to inquiries made on social media. Consider reaching out to Progressive via platforms like Twitter or Facebook to explain your situation. They may direct you to someone who can help.

    5. File a Formal Complaint: If you’re still not receiving any assistance, you may want to file a formal complaint with Progressive. You can also contact your state’s insurance department for guidance and to lodge a complaint if necessary.

    6. Speak to a Public Adjuster: If the situation doesn’t improve, consider consulting a public adjuster who can work on your behalf to represent your interests with the insurance company.

    7. Consider Temporary Living Arrangements: If possible, explore options for temporary housing that may offer more comfort for you and your pets. This might relieve some immediate stress while you sort out the insurance details.

    8. Stay Organized: Create a checklist of urgent items you need from the insurance company, such as confirmation of payment amounts and timelines. This will help keep your conversations focused and productive.

Remember to take care of yourself during this difficult time. It’s understandable to feel overwhelmed, but reaching out for help and staying persistent can make a difference. You deserve to get the resolution you need to be back in your home. Good luck!
