Ortho Coverage: Primary and Secondary

Orthodontic Coverage: Primary and Secondary

Hello!

My child is getting braces, which cost $5,000 in total. The mother’s insurance covers 60% up to $2,000, while the father’s plan covers 50% up to $1,500.

Does this mean our total out-of-pocket expense will be $1,500?

Thanks for your help!

  1. Hi!

Let’s break down the ortho coverage:

    1. Mom’s Coverage: She covers 60% of up to $2000. So:
    2. 60% of $2000 = $1200 (this is the maximum she will pay)

    3. Dad’s Coverage: He covers 50% of up to $1500. So:

    4. 50% of $1500 = $750 (this is the maximum he will pay)

Now, let’s see how much they will contribute together:

    • Total contribution from Mom = $1200
    • Total contribution from Dad = $750

    Total insurance coverage = $1200 (Mom) + $750 (Dad) = $1950

The total cost of braces is $5000, so the out-of-pocket expense will be:

    Total cost – Total insurance coverage = $5000 – $1950 = $3050

So, unfortunately, the total out-of-pocket cost will be $3050, not $1500.

Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any more questions.
