Are property insurers now mandating home inspections for coverage?
My neighbor recently tried to reduce their homeowners insurance costs in Georgia and found a cheaper option. However, after finalizing the deal, they were informed that an inspection was mandatory, and they would need to replace their roof on a house built in 1987. Even though the roof was only 10 years old and had no leaks or problems, they ended up spending $7,000. So much for saving money!
Has anyone else gone through this? I currently have USAA and am looking to lower my combined property and auto insurance rates. I’m tired of their continuous rate increases. I’d appreciate any insights you can share!
It’s frustrating to hear about your neighbor’s experience, especially when they were trying to save money. Insurers are increasingly requiring home inspections as a way to assess risk and ensure that properties meet their underwriting guidelines. The age and condition of the roof can significantly impact insurance rates since older roofs are often seen as a higher risk for claims.
While some insurers may be more lenient, others have strict requirements that can surprise policyholders after they’ve committed. It’s definitely worth doing some research before switching providers. If you’re looking to lower your rates with USAA or another insurer, consider asking specifically about any inspection requirements or potential upgrades that could help you qualify for better rates.
Also, you might want to explore bundling discounts or increased deductibles, which could help reduce your premiums without requiring major repairs. Connecting with an insurance agent to discuss your options might also uncover other avenues for savings. Good luck!
