Does Motorcycle/E-Bike Insurance Prevent a “Lapse in Coverage”?
Hello, everyone! My partner and I are gearing up to move to Washington state soon, and we’ve decided we won’t need a traditional car since we’ll be living in a highly walkable area. Instead, we’ll rely on E-bikes for our transportation needs.
We have a couple of concerns: first, we’re worried that if we have a lapse in coverage, it could lead to significantly higher rates when we eventually decide to get a car again. Second, we want to ensure that if we need to rent a car for a day, we have coverage for that.
So, my question is: if we opt for motorcycle/E-bike insurance, will it suffice to avoid a lapse in coverage? Additionally, does this type of policy cover car rentals for a day in a similar way to traditional auto insurance?
Thanks for your help!
Hi there!
Transitioning to e-bikes sounds exciting, and it’s great to hear you’re planning for your transportation needs in Washington!
Regarding your questions, here are some insights:
Lapse in Coverage: Generally, if you hold motorcycle or e-bike insurance, it could potentially help you avoid a lapse in your auto insurance history. Insurers typically consider past coverage when determining rates for future policies. However, it’s crucial to check with your insurance provider to ensure that your specific e-bike or motorcycle policy meets the criteria for avoiding a lapse in your auto insurance record.
Renting a Car: Most motorcycle or e-bike insurance policies do not automatically cover rental cars. To have coverage for renting a car, you’d usually need a traditional auto insurance policy, or you might have to purchase additional coverage from the rental company. Some credit cards also offer rental car insurance, so that’s worth exploring as well.
It might be a good idea to reach out to a few insurance providers and discuss your situation with them to find the best coverage options that suit your needs for both e-bikes and any potential car rentals. Best of luck with your move and your new biking adventures!
