At fault driver, should I go through my insurance, or settle it with the other driver

I’m in a bit of a dilemma and could use some advice. I’m a new driver paying about $500 a month for the minimum state insurance. I recently had an accident in a parking lot where I accidentally bumped into the back of a pickup truck. The owner contacted me later that day with two options: I could either pay for the damages directly, or we could both go through our insurance companies.

However, just a couple of days later, he sent me a quote for about $4,000 to fix the truck, as it requires a full repaint. I’m concerned that if I file a claim with my insurance, my premiums will increase significantly, especially since I’m already paying a lot for limited coverage. What do you think I should do? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

  1. It’s understandable to be concerned about how an accident might affect your insurance premiums, especially as a new driver. Here are some things to consider:

    1. Assessment of Damage: First, make sure that the quote you received from the other driver seems reasonable. If possible, get a few estimates from different body shops for comparison. This will give you a better understanding of the true cost of repairs.

    2. Insurance Involvement: If you choose to go through insurance, it’s likely that your premiums will increase due to the accident being on your record. However, if the other driver decides to pursue a claim against you and you’re not insured, you could be on the hook for the full cost out of pocket, plus potential legal fees.

    3. Settling Directly: If you decide to settle with the other driver directly, make sure to get everything in writing. This includes the quote, the agreement about payment, and any terms you both agree on. It’s important to keep a record in case something comes up later.

    4. Consult Your Insurance Company: You might want to reach out to your insurance provider to understand the impact of filing a claim versus settling directly. They can provide insights into how it might affect your premiums.

    5. Consider Your Financial Situation: Weigh the risks of paying out of pocket versus the long-term costs of increased premiums. If you can afford to pay the quote and feel comfortable doing so, that may help you avoid a claim that could negatively affect your insurance in the long run.

Ultimately, it’s a personal decision based on your financial situation, comfort level, and how you believe the other driver will respond. Just be careful to document everything if you choose to settle directly to avoid any complications later.
