Subject: Question About Uninsured Motorist Bodily Injury Coverage with AAA
Hi there,
I recently went through a car accident in which I was not at fault. During the investigation by AAA, it was revealed that the other party did not have insurance at the time of the incident. My main adjuster informed me that a collection agency is seeking reimbursement.
Currently, I only require coverage for my car repairs and ongoing medical expenses. My vehicle has already been repaired, but I’m still managing medical bills. My policy includes Uninsured Motorist coverage of $100,000 per person and $300,000 per accident.
Am I misunderstanding how this works? Why is AAA now presenting me with optional uninsured motorist bodily injury coverage?
Thanks in advance for your help!
Hello,
It sounds like you’re navigating a tricky situation, and I’m sorry to hear about your accident. Based on what you’ve described, it seems like you have a solid understanding of your policy, especially regarding the uninsured motorist coverage.
To clarify, your existing uninsured motorist coverage (UM) typically provides protection for your bodily injuries if the at-fault party doesn’t have insurance. Since you’ve mentioned that you have $100,000 per person and $300,000 per accident in UM coverage, you should be able to utilize this coverage for your medical bills, assuming they exceed the coverage limits available through other means (like your health insurance).
The reason AAA might be offering you additional uninsured motorist bodily injury optional coverage could be for a couple of reasons:
Enhanced Coverage: They may offer this as an option for policyholders who want to increase their limits beyond what you currently have, providing extra security in case of severe injuries in a similar situation in the future.
Reassessment of Needs: During their claims process, they might assess that due to not having coverage from the at-fault party, having higher limits could protect you better in subsequent incidents.
It doesn’t sound like you’re misunderstanding your current coverage, but it might be worthwhile to take a closer look at what additional benefits the optional coverage might offer and whether it fits your needs. It could also be helpful to speak again with your claims adjuster or a representative from AAA to clarify how your current policy applies to your specific situation and whether you can use your existing UM coverage for ongoing medical bills.
Best of luck!
