Is this timeline typical? How much longer will we have to wait for our payout?

On December 24th, a car took a turn too quickly and plowed through a row of trees that we planted a couple of years ago, damaging a section of our backyard fence in the process. We filed a claim with the driver’s insurance the very next day. Shortly after, the insurance company requested estimates for the damages, so we obtained quotes for the fence and the trees. These were submitted to the insurance company about a month later, on January 27th. We were then informed that we needed to wait for written confirmation of acceptance before proceeding with repairs.

Since then, I’ve been checking in weekly for updates, but I’m consistently told there’s no new information. Last week, they sent an appraiser to take additional photos, but that’s been the extent of the communication. Today marks roughly two months since the incident occurred.

Is this a standard timeline? How long do these processes usually take, and when should I become concerned about the delay?

  1. It’s understandable to feel frustrated with the timeline, as waiting for an insurance payout can often feel like a slow process. Generally, the time it takes for an insurance claim to be settled can vary widely depending on several factors, including the complexity of the claim, the insurance company’s processes, and how quickly both parties (you and the driver’s insurance) can communicate.

In simpler cases, payouts might happen within a few weeks, but more complicated claims, especially those involving property damage and multiple estimates, can take several months. That said, two months is not an unreasonable timeframe for an initial assessment and for the insurance to gather all necessary information, especially if they needed more documentation or appraisals.

However, if you feel like the process is dragging on without any meaningful updates, it may be a good idea to escalate the situation. Consider asking for a supervisor or filing a formal complaint if you don’t receive timely responses. You can also check your policy documents for timelines regarding claim processing. If it continues to take too long or you don’t get satisfactory answers, you may want to consult with a professional (like a public adjuster or an attorney) who specializes in insurance claims for guidance on how to proceed.
