Moving to another country with a car – insurance

Moving to Denmark with My Car – Need Insurance Advice

Hi everyone,

I’m relocating from Italy to Denmark at the beginning of June and have some questions about bringing my car along.

I want to take my car with me, but I need to sort out insurance first. My current insurance policy expires on June 4th, and I’ll be able to legally drive around Europe in May.

Here are my concerns:

I understand that I have 30 days to register my car once I arrive in Denmark. However, I might not have a permanent address or residency ID by that time, which makes it tricky to register and insure through a Danish company.

Another possibility could be to keep my car insured in Italy with a monthly plan until I have everything in order to finalize my move. The catch is that I’ll need the car for daily use during the initial months in Denmark.

Does anyone have insights on how to handle this? Is it common to get insurance from a European company that covers my car for an extended period, allowing me to change registration and nationality later?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you!

  1. Moving to a new country with your car can be a bit complex, but I can help clarify a few points regarding insurance and registration.

    1. Temporary Insurance in Italy: If your current insurance expires soon, you could consider renewing your Italian insurance on a monthly basis. This way, you’ll be covered while you transition to Denmark. Make sure to confirm with your insurance provider that they allow coverage while you’re outside Italy, as some providers have restrictions.

    2. Registering the Car in Denmark: You are correct that you typically have 30 days to register your vehicle in Denmark after moving. However, you will need a Danish address and possibly a CPR number (Danish personal identification number) to complete this process. If you can secure a temporary address or share an address with a friend or colleague, that might help expedite things.

    3. Danish Insurance: Once you have a valid Danish address and possibly your CPR number, you can look into Danish insurance options. Many companies offer flexible insurance policies tailored for expats. It’s worth reaching out to them in advance to discuss your situation.

    4. European Insurance: There are insurance companies that provide coverage across multiple countries in Europe. However, they may still require you to be a resident of the country in which you are insuring the vehicle. It can be challenging to find a policy that allows you to change nationality and plates without a local address.

    5. Using the Car: If you need the car for an extended period upon arrival in Denmark, moving forward with the Italian insurer and ensuring temporary coverage while you wait to register in Denmark could be the best option. Just keep in mind any specific regulations the Italian insurance company might have about using a car outside of Italy.

Ultimately, the best first step is to contact both your current insurance provider in Italy and potential insurance providers in Denmark to see what the options are. They’ll be able to provide the most accurate guidance based on your specific situation.

    Good luck with your move!
