Renters Insurance for a Two-Week Stay?
Hi everyone, I’m trying to figure out if it’s common and feasible to get renters insurance for a short period. I’m planning to rent a house for two weeks in a popular vacation spot in New York, directly from the homeowner. The lease draft I received includes this clause:
“Tenant agrees to purchase and maintain general liability and property insurance, referred to as ‘tenant’s insurance’ or ‘renter’s insurance,’ for the duration of this Lease. This insurance must be provided by a carrier licensed to operate in New York and should cover a minimum of one million dollars per claim and one million dollars in total. Each policy must also name the Landlord as an additional insured.”
I know that renters insurance is quite standard, but I’ve never heard of getting it for such a short period. Is this something that can typically be done? Thanks!
It’s not uncommon for landlords, especially in vacation or rental markets, to require renters insurance, even for short-term rentals. While many people think of renters insurance as a long-term necessity, several insurance providers do offer short-term policies that can cover rentals for as little as a few days to a couple of weeks.
Here are a few steps you can take to find the right coverage:
Contact Insurance Companies: Reach out to major insurance providers or local agencies to see if they offer short-term renters insurance. Some might have specific products tailored for vacation rentals or temporary stays.
Look for Online Insurance Options: There are also online platforms that specialize in short-term rentals and may offer instant coverage for short periods—sometimes even as little as one day.
Consider the Requirements: Make sure to discuss the specific requirements outlined in the lease, such as the coverage limits and the need to name the landlord as an additional insured. This is important as not all policies automatically include this and you may need to request it.
Cost Consideration: Short-term renters insurance is generally more affordable than one may think; it can range from $10 to $50 for a couple of weeks, depending on the coverage and the provider.
Review Policy Details: Before purchasing, ensure that the policy protects against liability and covers personal belongings, as required by your lease.
In summary, while it isn’t as commonplace as obtaining long-term renters insurance, getting coverage for two weeks is definitely feasible. Just be sure to read the fine print and ensure that you meet the requirements set by your landlord.
