SR-22

SR-22 Help Needed

Hi everyone, about a year ago, I was involved in an accident, and it turns out my dad never added me to his insurance policy. As a result, my license was suspended for a year. Right after the accident, I secured my own insurance, but I didn’t realize I wasn’t covered under his plan. Now, I’m trying to reinstate my license, but I’m feeling really confused about the process. I currently have insurance with GEICO.

I’m wondering if filing for financial responsibility (an SR-22) will raise my insurance rates or if it’s simply an additional requirement. I really want to approach this responsibly, but it’s been quite overwhelming.

Update: I spoke with an agent, and thankfully, since the accident is already on my record, filing the SR-22 won’t increase my rates. The agent explained that the accident itself caused my rate hike, and the SR-22 is just a way to confirm I’ll keep paying for insurance for at least three years. The only costs I’ll incur are $50 for the SR-22 filing and $150 to the DMV for reinstating my license. I’ll keep you all posted once I complete everything later this month (in California). Thanks for the support!

  1. Hi there! It sounds like you’ve been through a lot, but it’s great to hear you’ve been proactive in addressing the situation and got in touch with an agent. It’s definitely good news that the SR-22 won’t raise your rate since the accident is already affecting it. That’s a relief! Just remember that the SR-22 is indeed important to maintain your insurance eligibility and to get your license reinstated.

Make sure to keep all your documentation in order and stay on top of those payments over the next three years. If you have any more questions or concerns along the way, don’t hesitate to ask. Wishing you all the best as you get everything sorted out! Hang in there!
