What can I do…

What are my options here?

Back in January, I was in an accident with an older driver. Their insurance company sent me a check, but it never arrived. I reached out to them this past Monday, and they reissued a new check, which I received on Wednesday. Today, the original check finally showed up. Can I cash this original check and then call the insurance on Monday to request a stop payment on the new one, ensuring it’s never cashed? Is the original check still valid, or is it considered void now?

  1. It’s great that you received both checks, but you should proceed with caution. Generally, once a new check is issued for a claim, the original one is often considered void. However, it’s best to confirm with the insurance company. You can cash the original check, but doing so could potentially lead to complications.

Make sure to contact the insurance company first to let them know about the situation and ask whether you can cash the original check. If they confirm that it’s okay to cash it, you should also ask them to stop payment on the new check to avoid any issues down the line. Keeping everything documented is a good idea too.
