Car insurance experience with renewing

Frustration with Car Insurance Renewal

Hey everyone, I wanted to share a recent experience I had with car insurance renewals that left me really perplexed. Is this typical?

After being with State Farm for several decades, I noticed they didn’t seem to value my loyalty. New customers often received better deals than I did. So, last year I made the switch to Progressive, attracted by their user-friendly online platform that allowed me to tailor coverage for each vehicle easily.

However, at my first renewal, my premium increased by $20. One of the reasons I left State Farm was the feeling of being unfairly charged over the years with constant price hikes. When I called Progressive to ask about my increase, I learned it was due to the expiration of a new customer discount that I could no longer receive. It was disappointing, but I decided to renew anyway.

When my renewal came around again recently, I was shocked to see my premium jump by $70 despite having no accidents or tickets and insuring five vehicles. About 20 days before my renewal date, I reached out to a representative who said he could revert my rate to what it was originally. He instructed me to contact him in early March to finalize the adjustment.

Unfortunately, after several days of trying to reach him without success, I called the general customer service line. I provided them with my reference number, and while they acknowledged my previous quote, I watched in disbelief as they pressed a button and my price suddenly skyrocketed by an additional $100. Frustrated, I decided to walk away and find a better option.

I turned to an online broker tool that ultimately led me back to Progressive. After inputting my details, I was pleasantly surprised to receive a quote that was even lower than my initial quote from last year, all for the same coverage on five vehicles.

So, is it just standard practice to reapply as a new customer every year? In the end, I managed to save $475.

  1. It sounds like you went through quite an ordeal with your car insurance renewal! It’s definitely frustrating when loyalty to a company doesn’t seem to be rewarded, and it’s a common sentiment among many consumers. Unfortunately, many insurance companies offer better rates to new customers as a way to attract business, which can leave longtime clients feeling undervalued.

Your experience with Progressive shows just how much rates can fluctuate from year to year, even when you maintain a clean driving record. It’s good to hear that you took the initiative to shop around and ultimately found a better deal that actually saved you quite a bit of money!

In response to your question, it does often feel like consumers need to act like new customers every year to get the best rates. Many people have started comparing quotes regularly or switching insurers when renewal time comes around, and it’s something that more consumers should consider doing to ensure they are getting the best possible deal.

It’s always a good idea to periodically review your coverage and compare options, as rates can change based on many factors, not just your driving history. Hopefully, your experience will help others recognize the importance of shopping around for car insurance, regardless of how long they’ve been with a particular company. Happy driving with your new policy!
