Can I take my wrecked car out of the tow yard to fix it myself ?

Can I retrieve my damaged car from the tow yard to repair it myself? I only need to fix the radiator, hood, and bumper, but it was towed as undriveable after the accident. I still have a loan on the vehicle, and I really love this car. Unfortunately, the insurance company is taking a long time to send an adjuster, and they haven’t been answering my calls.

I was involved in a collision with another car at the accident site. Is it permissible for me to pay the tow yard’s current fees and have my car brought to my driveway so I can work on it and hopefully get it back on the road in less than a week?

I don’t have a rental car despite paying for coverage, and I’m frustrated with the lack of communication from my insurance in California.

  1. Yes, you can typically retrieve your wrecked car from the tow yard as long as you pay the towing and storage fees. Since you mentioned that you still have a loan on the car, it’s important to check with your lender to ensure there aren’t any restrictions on removing the car without their consent.

In California, as long as you are the registered owner of the vehicle (or have the lender’s permission), you should be able to pay the tow yard and get your car back to work on it. Just keep in mind that since it was deemed undriveable, you should only transport it on a flatbed truck or trailer to avoid any legal issues.

As for dealing with the insurance company, consider reaching out via email or their website if phone calls aren’t getting through. They might provide options for getting a rental car or assistance with your claim.

Lastly, be cautious when making repairs, especially since it was involved in an accident that may involve another party. You may want to consult with your insurance company about any implications before you start repairs. Good luck!
