How many cars have you totaled?

How many cars have you totaled? Am I just unfortunate? Here’s a rundown of my claim history since 1992:

  • 1992: My Jeep Wrangler was stolen
  • 2008: My Sable wagon was totaled
  • 2012: I lost three cars in the Sandy flood—GMC, BMW, and Mercedes
  • 2022: My oldest kid totaled my Chevy
  • 2025: My middle child totaled our Cadillac

That adds up to seven cars. Is that a lot? I haven’t sold a car since 1990; I usually just buy new ones after an old one gets totaled.

What’s the average number of claims for a typical person?

  1. Wow, that’s quite a history with cars! Seven totaled vehicles definitely seems like a lot, especially since it spans over several decades. It sounds like you’ve had some really tough luck with theft and accidents involving family members.

As for the average person, insurance claims can vary greatly depending on factors like driving habits, location, and vehicle type, but generally, many people might have one or two claims over their lifetime, if any at all. It’s hard to say an exact number since it can vary widely, but your situation is definitely on the unique side! Have you thought about any tips for avoiding similar incidents in the future?
