Son’s car died, using Grandfathers car till he finds a new one. Insurance Question

My son’s car broke down, so we’re using my grandfather’s car while he looks for a replacement. I have a question about insurance: Should we keep the insurance on my son’s old car until he gets a new one? Or does he still need coverage if my grandfather has insurance on the car we’re currently using? This is in Ontario, Canada. Thanks!

  1. In Ontario, Canada, it’s important to maintain insurance coverage on any vehicle that is being driven, regardless of whose vehicle it is. Here are some key points to consider:

    1. Insurance on His Own Car: Even though the car your son owned has died, he should contact his insurance provider to discuss whether he needs to keep the policy active or if it can be canceled if the car is permanently out of service.

    2. Driving Grandfather’s Car: When using your grandfather’s car, it’s essential to check if your grandfather’s insurance policy covers other drivers. Most policies in Ontario cover occasional drivers, but it’s best to confirm with the insurance provider to ensure that your son is adequately covered while driving his grandfather’s vehicle.

    3. Switching Insurance: If your son plans to purchase a new car soon, he might want to keep his insurance temporarily to avoid any gaps in coverage, especially if he is actively looking for a replacement.

In summary, it would be wise for your son to contact both his insurance provider and his grandfather’s insurance provider to clarify the best approach regarding coverage during this transition period.
