Brand new driver in California

New Driver in California Seeking Insurance Advice

Hi everyone! I just obtained my driver’s license in the U.S. and now I’m in search of auto insurance before hitting the road. My partner has been driving since they were 18 and is currently 27. I’m 33 and have very little driving experience (only 0-1 year). Their existing insurance is about $200 a month. We live in California and typically only drive on weekends or for errands since we can walk or take the bus to work.

I received online quotes ranging from $600 to $700 a month for both of us, which seems quite high but understandable given my lack of experience. I’d love to know if this estimate is way off or if it’s within a reasonable range.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks for your help as I navigate this process!

  1. Welcome to the world of driving! It’s great that you’re getting your license and thinking about insurance. Given that you’re a brand new driver in California, it’s not uncommon for insurance quotes to be on the higher side. Insurance companies consider new drivers to be higher risk, which can lead to higher premiums.

For both you and your partner, a ballpark figure of $600-700 per month does seem high but can be expected for a new driver. Typically, rates can vary depending on factors such as the type of car you drive, your driving history, and even your credit score. Your partner’s experience can help bring down the overall cost, but as a new driver, you may still see some hefty prices.

Since you both don’t drive often, consider raising your deductible or looking into usage-based insurance programs. Also, don’t forget to shop around and consider different insurance providers, as rates can vary significantly. Discounts for bundling policies or safe driving could also help lower your costs.

It might be a good idea to consult with an insurance agent who can provide personalized quotes and advice based on your specific situation. Good luck with your new driving adventure!
