Car insurance experience with renewing

My Frustrating Car Insurance Renewal Experience

Hi everyone, I just had a bewildering experience with my car insurance renewal, and I’m curious if anyone else has faced something similar.

I’ve been with State Farm for many years, but it became clear to me that my loyalty meant very little to them. New customers were often offered better deals, which felt really unfair. So, last year, I made the switch to Progressive and loved their user-friendly online platform. I was able to customize my coverage for each vehicle without any hassle.

However, when my first renewal came up, my premium increased by $20. One of the main reasons I left State Farm was because I felt taken advantage of with their price hikes over the years. I reached out to Progressive to ask about the increase and was informed it was due to a new customer discount that I no longer qualified for. Disappointed but willing to move forward, I renewed my policy.

Fast forward to my latest renewal—my premium jumped by $70! I have no accidents or tickets and have five cars on the policy.

About 20 days before renewal, I called Progressive and spoke with a representative. He assured me he could bring the price back down to the original rate and instructed me to call him in early March to apply the change.

After trying to get in touch with him for about 3 to 4 days with no luck, I called the regular customer service line armed with my reference number. They acknowledged the previous quote, but as they were finalizing my policy, the price inexplicably shot up by another $100! Frustrated, I decided to cancel my renewal and look elsewhere.

Using an online broker tool, I ended up back with Progressive, and after entering all my information, I received a quote that was actually cheaper than what I initially had last year for the same coverage on five vehicles.

Is this the norm? Do we really have to reapply as new customers every year just to get the best rates? In the end, I saved $475!

Has anyone else had similar experiences with their insurance renewals?

  1. It sounds like you had quite a frustrating experience with your car insurance renewal! It’s unfortunate that loyalty often doesn’t seem to translate into better rates. Many people have noticed that insurance companies tend to offer more competitive rates for new customers while increasing premiums for existing ones.

Your experience with Progressive seems to highlight the value of shopping around, especially when it comes to insurance. It’s great to hear that you were able to find a better rate using an online broker tool – that’s a smart move! It’s becoming more common for people to reassess their options each year, and sometimes it does feel like you have to act as a new customer to get the best deals.

In short, while it shouldn’t have to be this way, regularly comparing quotes and being proactive can lead to significant savings. Hopefully, your new policy will serve you better, and you won’t have to deal with those frustrations again! Thank you for sharing your experience; it might encourage others to take a closer look at their own insurance situations.
