Car title and insurance issues

Subject: Car Title and Insurance Concerns

Hi everyone,

Last year, I totaled my car and sold it to Progressive, at which point I signed over the title. Now, I’m receiving red light and speeding tickets in my name for incidents that occurred after I sold the vehicle. What should I do about this situation?

Thanks for your help!

  1. Hi there,

I’m sorry to hear about your situation; that sounds really frustrating. Since you’ve already sold the car and transferred the title to Progressive, you should take the following steps:

    1. Gather Documentation: Collect all documents related to the sale of your car, including the signed title and any correspondence with Progressive. It’s important to have proof that you are no longer the owner.

    2. Contact Progressive: Reach out to Progressive to confirm that the title transfer has been processed on their end. They may also have records that indicate when they took ownership of the vehicle.

    3. Notify Your Local DMV: Contact your local Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) to inform them that you sold the car and request that they update their records. This may help clear your name regarding any tickets issued in the future.

    4. Challenge the Tickets: For any red light or speeding tickets that have been issued in your name for incidents after the sale, you can contest them. Gather evidence (like your sale documents) to show that you were not the owner of the vehicle at the time of the infractions.

    5. Monitor Your Records: Keep an eye on your driving records for any further issues. Make sure to stay proactive about resolving this situation to avoid any impact on your driving history or insurance rates.

If the situation becomes more complicated or if the tickets are affecting you significantly, consider consulting with a legal professional who specializes in traffic or automotive issues.

I hope this helps, and best of luck resolving everything!

    Take care!
