Need Help! First Time in a Collision
Hi everyone,
I recently had my first accident and bumped my car against a curb. Thankfully, no one was injured, and there’s only minor exterior damage. However, the side airbags deployed, and now my car won’t drive due to a low battery and some brake warnings.
I arranged for a free tow from Toyota to the nearest dealership, but they informed me that they couldn’t keep my car and advised me to take it to a collision center. It’s now at the collision center, and I’m feeling quite anxious about the next steps and potential costs.
I have Geico insurance and would appreciate any insights on what the process looks like after dropping my car off at the collision center. Do I need to cover all costs upfront and then file a claim, or will the insurance handle it differently? What if the car is deemed totaled? Will Geico cover that?
The police officer mentioned that because the side airbags deployed, it might be considered a total loss, despite the minor exterior damage.
If anyone with experience can provide some guidance, I’d be really grateful.
Here are the details of my insurance coverage:
– Comprehensive (Excluding Collision) – $500 Deductible
– Collision – $500 Deductible
– Emergency Road Service – Accepted
– Rental Reimbursement – $50/Day, $1,500 Max
– Mechanical Breakdown Insurance – $250 Deductible
It sounds like you’re going through a tough situation, but I’m glad to hear that you’re okay! Here’s a general overview of what to expect next:
Insurance Claims Process: Since you have Geico, you should call them ASAP to report the accident and initiate a claim. They will guide you through the process and inform you of the necessary steps.
Assessment of Damage: The collision center will assess the damage to your car and provide a detailed estimate. Make sure to keep a copy of this estimate for your records.
Filing a Claim: Once you have the estimate, Geico may send an adjuster to evaluate the damage or they may accept the collision center’s assessment. Depending on the damage and the adjuster’s findings, they will determine if the car is repairable or if it’s a total loss.
Total Loss Consideration: If your car is deemed a total loss (which can happen if the cost of repairs exceeds a certain percentage of its value), Geico will provide you with a payout for the current market value of the car, minus your deductible. Since you have a $500 collision deductible, that amount will be deducted from the payout amount.
Payments: You typically won’t need to pay for everything out of pocket upfront. If Geico pays for the repairs, they will apply your deductible directly. If the car is totaled, they will settle directly with you or the finance company if applicable.
Rental Reimbursement: Since you have rental reimbursement coverage, you can claim expenses for a rental car while your vehicle is being evaluated or repaired. Make sure to keep all related receipts.
Follow-up: Stay in touch with both the collision center and Geico for updates on the status of your claim. They should let you know if they need any additional information from you during the process.
It’s understandable to feel scared; the good news is that you’re doing the right thing by contacting your insurance company and seeking help. Make sure to keep all of your documentation organized, and don’t hesitate to ask questions to your insurance adjuster if anything is unclear!
