Home Insurance Inquiry
Hi everyone,
I have a question regarding home insurance that I hope someone can help me with.
Context: I purchased my home in late December 2024, and shortly after, in January 2025, I filed a covered claim for damages, which are currently still being repaired. About a week after the repair work began, I received a letter from my insurance provider stating they would be canceling my policy in two weeks. This policy was paid in full for a year at the time of closing. My insurance agent explained that the cancellation was due to an underwriter noticing a missed checkbox, and claimed this was a common practice. I reside in Indiana.
Questions: This situation feels like retaliation for my claim. 1. Is it legal for them to cancel a policy like this without cause? 2. What options do I have moving forward?
Thank you for your assistance!
I see you’re dealing with a frustrating situation regarding your home insurance policy. Here are some insights that might help:
Cancellation Without Cause: In Indiana, insurance companies typically have the right to cancel a policy under certain circumstances, particularly if there was a mistake in the application or if the policyholder misrepresented information. However, they cannot cancel a policy purely in retaliation for filing a claim. If the cancellation was indeed due to a clerical error (like not checking a box), that should not be grounds for cancellation without proper communication and opportunity to rectify the issue.
Your Options:
Document everything related to the claim and the cancellation process, as it may be helpful in resolving this issue. Good luck, and I hope you get it sorted out!
