How messed up am I?

Am I in a tough spot here?

My wife and I recently started a new insurance policy after our previous one ended, and we thought everything was in good standing. We were waiting for the first payment to be pulled, and we even received our insurance ID card. During this time, my wife accidentally backed into our neighbor’s illegally parked vehicle. Thankfully, our neighbor was very understanding about it. However, just days after that incident, Progressive canceled our policy. Now, I’m worried I might have to cover the costs out of pocket.

I’m looking for advice on what options I have and whether Progressive could be held responsible for the damages, even though they rescinded the policy after the incident. Any insights would be appreciated!

  1. It sounds like you’re in a tough situation, and it’s understandable to feel worried. Here are some things you might consider regarding your options:

    1. Contact Progressive: Start by calling Progressive’s customer service. Explain your situation in detail, including the timeline of events, your understanding of the policy, and the fact that you were using their services. They may be able to provide clarity on whether they cover the incident despite recanting the policy.

    2. Review Your Documents: Look over any correspondence or documents you received from Progressive, especially regarding the cancellation of the policy. If they sent you an ID card, it’s possible you had coverage up until a certain point—understanding the exact terms is crucial.

    3. Negotiate with the Neighbor: Since your neighbor has been understanding, it might be worth discussing the situation with them. They may be willing to wait for you to resolve the insurance issue before demanding payment for damages.

    4. Explore Other Coverage: Check if you have other insurance that might cover the situation, such as homeowner’s or renter’s insurance. Sometimes, these policies can provide liability coverage in situations like this.

    5. Seek Legal Advice: If you’re still unsure about your coverage or how to proceed, it might be beneficial to consult with a legal professional. They can give you advice specific to your situation and local laws.

Ultimately, it’s important to clarify your coverage situation with Progressive as soon as possible. Good luck, and I hope it all works out for you!
