I’m looking for some guidance on a situation I’m facing.

Back in Spring 2023, I had a slip-and-fall accident that required around eight months of physical therapy, along with an ER visit and an MRI about a month post-accident. I made sure to pay my share of the MRI bill and any other bills as they came, and my claims were processed through my insurance.

During my recovery, I was also in touch with the store where the accident occurred. Once my physical therapy wrapped up in February 2024, I began the settlement process with the retailer. Somehow, my insurance caught wind of this and started reaching out to me, stating that I needed to reimburse them if I reached a settlement with a liable third party. Their subrogation team collaborated with the retailer’s claims department, and ultimately, after reviewing all my medical expenses, they reached a settlement that allowed my insurance to recoup what they paid for my treatment—matching the claims my insurance had submitted.

In mid-October to early November 2024, I, along with the subrogation company, received our payments, and everything seemed fine—until recently.

A few weeks ago, I received calls and voicemails from the MRI center about an outstanding balance. Initially, they told me it was a billing error and to disregard it. However, just yesterday, I got an actual bill for over $2,000. When I called to inquire, they informed me that my insurance company had reversed their payments, and now I’m responsible for the full amount of the MRI.

Has anyone encountered a similar situation? It seems like the insurance company recouped their costs from the providers and then took back the payments they made, leaving me to cover all my medical expenses, which was never mentioned as a possibility. How can they recover money twice like this? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
