Progressive is raising my Rates from $126/mo. to $160/mo. Am I overreacting by trying to find something else?

I’m facing a rate hike from Progressive, going from $126/month to $160/month, and I’m wondering if I’m overreacting by looking for alternatives.

  • Vehicle: 2015 Toyota Camry (Owned)
  • State: CA
  • Current Rate: $126/month
  • Age: 38, with a spotless driving record.

Progressive has been increasing my rates gradually over the years, but it was usually just a couple of dollars at a time, so I didn’t think much of it. I started at $100/month back in 2018, so I shrugged off the small increases until now.

This new jump of $35/month is the largest I’ve seen at once, and I can’t help but think they might raise it again in six months. Part of me wants to switch providers, driven by frustration, while another part of me wonders if I’m still getting a decent deal compared to others—especially considering how often people complain about their premiums.

I did get a quote from GEICO for $42/month, but I’m aware that it may just be an enticing initial offer that won’t hold up long-term.

I’d appreciate any insights or advice from those with more experience in dealing with insurance companies. Thanks!

  1. It’s completely understandable to feel frustrated with such a significant rate increase, especially when you’ve been a loyal customer with a spotless driving record. A jump from $126 to $160 per month is substantial, and your concerns about future increases are valid.

Given your spotless record and the fact that you own your vehicle, shopping around for new quotes is definitely worth considering. While GEICO’s initial quote is likely lower due to promotional pricing, it’s a good idea to gather multiple quotes from different companies to compare rates and coverage. This can help you find a better fit, especially if you’ve noticed Progressive’s rates have been steadily increasing without justification.

Additionally, don’t be afraid to reach out to Progressive and ask for an explanation regarding the increase. Sometimes, companies may work with you to find a more favorable rate, especially if you mention that you’re considering switching.

Ultimately, finding a policy that makes you feel comfortable with the cost is important, and there’s no harm in exploring your options. Good luck with your search!
