Subrogation Inquiry
Hello! I was recently in a motor vehicle accident that should ultimately be deemed the other driver’s fault. Unfortunately, our insurance policy doesn’t cover rental cars, and we’ve been managing with our secondary vehicle while our SUV is being repaired. We have a family vacation coming up later this week and are considering hiring a car service for transportation to and from the airport, as our secondary vehicle isn’t spacious enough for our family and luggage. Would it be possible to submit the receipts for reimbursement through subrogation? If so, are there any limitations on the types of services we can use or the associated costs? Thank you!
Hi there! I’m sorry to hear about your recent accident, but it sounds like you’re navigating things well. Generally, in a subrogation situation, you may be able to get reimbursed for reasonable expenses that are a direct result of the accident, including transportation costs if your vehicle is not available.
When it comes to hiring a car service to get to and from the airport, it’s best to keep a few things in mind:
Reasonableness: The cost should be reasonable and necessary—try to demonstrate that hiring the car service was the most practical option given your family size and luggage.
Documentation: Make sure to keep all receipts and records of the car service you hire. This will be essential for substantiating your claim during the subrogation process.
Insurance Policy Limits: Review your insurance policy or speak to your agent to see if there are any specific limitations or guidelines regarding reimbursable transportation costs.
Type of Service: While you might prefer a higher-end service for comfort, choosing a standard car service rather than a luxury option may be better received during the reimbursement process.
Contact Your Insurance Company: It might also be helpful to reach out to your insurance provider for clarification on whether they allow reimbursements for this type of expense and any specific guidelines they may have before you hire the service.
Good luck with your vacation and the claims process! Safe travels!
