Will filing a claim with my own insurance be viewed as an admission of fault?
I was in an accident on Monday and have collision coverage. I know that going through my insurance would likely get my car repaired faster, but I’m concerned about it being counted as a claim that could affect my premiums or risk losing my coverage. I’ve already filed a claim with the other driver’s insurance, and they’re currently waiting for the police report.
I have Allstate, and the other driver is with National General, which I hope will simplify the claims process since they’re part of the same company. Unfortunately, I don’t have rental coverage, so if I use my insurance, I won’t be able to get a rental car, and I rely on my vehicle for transportation.
To sum it up, I believe the other driver failed to yield as I was turning into a parking lot. I’ve created a diagram to illustrate the incident.

Filing a claim with your own insurance doesn’t automatically imply that you’re admitting fault, especially if you believe the other driver is responsible for the accident. While it’s understandable to be concerned about potential rate increases or being dropped by your insurer, remember that accidents themselves aren’t solely what affect your insurance rates; factors like your driving record and claims history also play a role.
Since you’ve already filed a claim with the other driver’s insurance, that may expedite the process and help clarify fault, especially if the police report supports your account. However, if you need a quicker resolution and don’t have rental coverage, filing with your own insurance could mean you’d have your car repaired faster, but you would indeed face the possibility of higher premiums down the line for that claim.
Ultimately, consider talking to your insurance agent about your specific situation. They can provide insight into how a claim might affect your rates and help you weigh the pros and cons. It might also be worth checking if there’s any way to get temporary assistance with transportation in the meantime while you await the results from the other party’s insurance. Good luck!
