Got insurance I didn’t ask for, how to proceed?

I received insurance that I never asked for—what should I do?

I have health insurance through my husband. We both worked for the same company, but he left to pursue a better opportunity while I remained covered under his plan at his new job. Shortly after the switch, I received Cigna insurance cards in the mail, even though that’s not the insurance he has.

When we visited a clinic recently, I tried to use his insurance, but it was denied as “secondary,” which means I need to use my primary insurance first. I’ve figured out how to cancel the Cigna plan. My dilemma is whether to cancel it now and accept the $300 bill from the clinic, or should I attempt to get Cigna to cover some of it first, even though the plan is pretty basic?

Additionally, if I cancel Cigna, will my “secondary” insurance automatically become my primary coverage?

  1. It sounds like a frustrating situation, but I can help clarify things for you.

    1. Using Cigna First: Since you received the insurance cards for Cigna without requesting them, it might be worth contacting Cigna customer service to see if there’s any retroactive way for them to cover part of your clinic visit before you cancel. Sometimes, they may cover some costs, especially if the services are eligible under their plan—though benefits can vary widely.

    2. Canceling Cigna: If you decide to proceed with cancelling Cigna, make sure to do so after you’ve confirmed how claims are processed with your primary insurance (your husband’s coverage). It’s a good idea to formally cancel the Cigna insurance rather than just not using it, especially if you didn’t purposely enroll in it.

    3. Transitioning to Primary: When you cancel Cigna, your husband’s insurance should indeed become your primary. However, it’s crucial to verify this with your husband’s insurance provider to ensure there are no complications with claim processing. They can provide guidance on what to do next.

Overall, it might be advantageous to attempt to contact Cigna about the clinic bill before making any changes to your insurance status. Good luck!
