I’ll have 8 years sober on April 9, but I can’t get life insurance because I went to rehab 8 years ago.

I’ll celebrate 8 years of sobriety on April 9, but I’m struggling to get life insurance because I went to rehab 8 years ago. I’m feeling really frustrated and hoping for some guidance. Despite my accomplishments over nearly a decade of sobriety, the insurance provider has denied me coverage due to my “history of drugs and alcohol,” with no further explanation given.

The only evidence of this history is my outpatient rehab for alcoholism back in 2017. It’s disheartening to see that individuals who are still actively using drugs or alcohol can obtain life insurance, while I, who sought help and succeeded, am left without coverage. I’ve never had a DUI or any criminal charges—I’ve taken responsibility for my health.

Three years ago, I applied for life insurance and was denied due to my rehab history within the past seven years. I believed that would drop off my MIB report after that time, but my current record now shows a denial from 2022 for alcohol and drug usage, even though there’s no mention of the rehab itself. This creates a confusing situation, as I’m concerned that I’ll continue facing these issues down the line, especially by the time I’m 47.

I’ve been working with two brokers lately. The first one went dark for about a month, prompting me to reach out to the second to start the application. Shortly after, the first broker reappeared, claiming he thought he’d found a provider for me. Unfortunately, I just received a denial letter from the first broker’s provider, and I’m still waiting to hear back from the second broker, though I’m not optimistic. I’ve also heard that once you get denied by one company, it affects your chances with others for the next two years.

Am I out of luck? Is there a chance that my first broker reached out to multiple insurance companies, and this denial is just from one of them? I trust him—he’s worked with me and my family extensively—so I’m surprised I only received a standard letter instead of a personal note.

Thanks for any advice you can offer!

  1. First of all, congratulations on your upcoming 8 years of sobriety! That’s a huge achievement and something to be very proud of.

I can understand your frustration regarding the life insurance situation. It does seem unfair that seeking help and making positive changes can lead to roadblocks when it comes to securing insurance. It’s generally true that insurance companies have different policies, and many factors can influence their decisions.

Here are some steps you might consider:

    1. Consult an Insurance Expert: Since you’ve been working with brokers, it may be beneficial to explicitly ask them about your situation. They might have access to providers that are more lenient regarding past substance use and can help you navigate the system.

    2. Explore High-Risk Insurance: There are companies that specialize in covering high-risk individuals or those with past issues like substance abuse. These policies may come at a higher premium, but they could be an option.

    3. Look for Non-Traditional Providers: Some insurance companies might not use the MIB report in the same way or may have more holistic approaches. Research insurers known for working with individuals with a history of recovery.

    4. Gather Documentation: If you haven’t already, consider collecting documentation that showcases your ongoing sobriety and responsibility, like letters from therapists or support groups. This could strengthen your case when applying.

    5. Consider a Re-application Strategy: Sometimes it may be useful to take a brief break from reapplying, so past denials don’t negatively impact new applications. Check if waiting a bit could improve your odds.

    6. Inquire About Appeal Options: Some companies may offer an appeal process for denied applications. Inquire about this with the brokers and the providers they are working with.

    7. Connect with Support Groups: Others in recovery might have faced similar challenges. They might have advice or recommendations from their own experiences with insurance.

Remember, it might take some time and perseverance, but don’t lose hope. Your commitment to your sobriety speaks volumes, and there are options out there. You deserve the peace of mind that comes with having life insurance. Good luck, and keep pushing forward!
