TIL You Can Lower Car Insurance Costs by Requesting a New Quote Instead of Renewing

I pride myself on being financially savvy, but I completely overlooked this one. I’m with Progressive, and like many of you, I’ve felt the sting of soaring insurance rates—particularly here in Florida. In my quest for a better price, I decided to check my options.

Out of curiosity, I generated a new quote on the Progressive website using all the same information as my current policy—same personal details, same vehicle, same coverage. To my surprise, the new quote was $195 less than what they offered me for renewal!

I took the plunge and bought the new policy, fully expecting some sort of complication. However, Progressive made it easy by allowing me to link it to my existing account. When I called to cancel my old policy, the representative confirmed what I had done and mentioned that it’s a routine occurrence—so it’s perfectly permitted.

If you find your renewal rate to be on the high side, it could be a smart move to get a fresh quote rather than simply accepting the increase.

  1. That’s a great tip! It’s surprising how often people overlook the potential savings by just re-quoting with their own insurer. Insurance companies frequently adjust their rates, and they might offer better deals to new customers compared to existing ones. Your experience highlights the importance of shopping around, even within the same provider.

It’s good to hear that Progressive made the transition seamless for you. It’s crucial for consumers to be proactive about their insurance costs—every little bit helps, especially with rising rates. I’ll definitely be keeping this in mind next time my renewal is up! Thanks for sharing your experience!
